Cake toppers are one of those small wedding details that can easily get lost in the thick of things, which is a shame because they are incredibly important, seeing as how they take center stage on the wedding cake (one of those not so small details). A wedding topper is also the perfect opportunity to show guests (and by extension, the world) who the bride and groom are together. Personally, I find it as a fun opportunity to showcase both of their personalities and overall style.

Bob Mackie, The Sultan of Sequins

One of my favorite illustrators and designers, Edith Head, discovered fabulous Bob Mackie in 1961 while working at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. Mackie was known for his fancy burlesque show fashion designs and soon came to be known as the “Sultan of Sequins.” I love how he branded his designs to be known for outrageous and sometimes garish costuming, including the black sequined number Cher wore to the Academy Awards back in 1986. With his outrageous and sparkly designs, Mackie has left his mark on the fashion world for all time. How I would love to have a costume made by him for a masquerade ball!

Anyone who has visited Las Vegas understands the importance of glitz and glam at a show, but now apply that to your own life, your own events. Why not splash yourself with sequins and glitter and be seen for the … [read more]

Blue Monday: Kenya’s Lupita Nyong’o in Prada

Lupita Nyong’o: Gorgeous. Magnificent. Talented. I could add several other adjectives here to describe this Oscar-winning woman from Kenya.

Everyone is head over heels for her Elizabeth Taylor-inspired gown. The silk georgette soleil-pleated pale Nairobi blue dress dress was created by Prada, permanently anchoring itself in Oscar fashion history. Barely noticeable, on the skirt is a light sprinkling of iridescent beads, indicative of champagne bubbles. Lupita’s stylist, Micaela Erlanger, worked closely with Lupita and Prada, designing this dress with pure intention. Lupita’s goal was to bring in her native colors of Nairobi (blue), with the magic and magnificence of Oscar night, creating a truly celebratory dress.

Lupita also wore a frog-adorned pinky ring. In her family, amphibians hold a place on her family totem. Inside the dress, the frog also appeared on a tag to further brand the dress as her own. Family oriented, fabulous, and victorious.

The Oscars 2014: Jennifer Lawrence’s red Dior dress

The Oscars; an event most of us would love to attend, rubbing elbows with the finest actors, sipping on champagne, the after-Oscar parties…and the best thing of all? Wearing a couture designer gown on the red carpet. (At least for me). My fondness for the House of Dior is everlasting; it never ceases to impress me. I’ve admired the magic of Dior’s creations since my seamstress days and would gladly go back in time if only just to wear their designs from the 1950s. The simplicity of this haute couture Dior dress is what I admire, and it doesn’t hurt that Jennifer Lawrence’s curvaceous body allows the garment to flow perfectly to the ground.  The figure-hugging skirt with a subdued peplum is both glamorous and tasteful, and although I’m not normally fond of strapless fashions, this one is spot-on, and I’ve never been able … [read more]
